About the event
The winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is a time when the sun seems to stand still; in fact, the word solstice is rooted in Latin words that mean "to stand still." The day of the winter solstice brings the shortest length of daylight and is often referred to as the "darkest day" or the "longest night of the year." While those adages may ring true, I personally like to flip that narrative and say it is the gateway day to the return of light: our pivot point from increasing dark and cool to increasing light and warmth. The winter solstice is observed across cultures and societies with many traditions, most of them factor in some sort of illumination, like fire, to cast away the darkness of the "longest night." In our various yoga traditions, the solstice is observed with practices that lead us to a time of inward reflection, gentle movement to cast off lethargy and inertia, relaxation, and intention setting for what gets left behind in the darkness and what aspirations are ahead into the light.
Join me and Betsy Afton (aka YogaBetsy) for gentle, slow-flowing yoga, winter solstice prose and traditions, intention setting, and a relaxation guided by the soothing vibrations of singing bowls and instruments. This session will be appropriate for all levels with no previous yoga experience necessary.
